How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

There's nothing quite like lighting a beautifully crafted candle and filling your space with a signature scent. But if your candle is tunneling, flickering, or burning out too fast, you're not getting the full experience — or the full value. Here's how to make every burn count.

1. Always Do a Full First Burn

The single most important rule of candle care: on your very first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the jar. This prevents tunneling — a hollow channel that forms down the center — and sets the "memory" of the wax for every burn after. For a 10 oz Signature Candle, this typically takes 2–3 hours.

2. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

A wick that's too long creates a large, sooty flame that burns through wax too quickly. Before each lighting, trim your wick to about ¼ inch (6mm). A wick trimmer makes this easy — find one in our Accessories collection.

3. Burn in 2–4 Hour Sessions

Burning a candle for too long overheats the wax and can cause the wick to move or the jar to crack. Stick to sessions of 2–4 hours max, then let the candle cool completely before relighting.

4. Keep It Away from Drafts

Air movement — from fans, open windows, or vents — causes uneven burning and excessive flickering. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts for the cleanest, most even burn.

5. Store Candles Properly

Heat and sunlight degrade fragrance and can cause discoloration. Store unused candles in a cool, dark place with the lid on to preserve the scent throw.

6. Know When to Stop

Stop burning your candle when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning past this point can overheat the jar and damage the surface beneath it.
