Candles bring warmth, ambiance, and beautiful fragrance to any space — but like any open flame, they deserve a little respect. Follow these candle care and safety guidelines to enjoy every burn with complete peace of mind.
Before You Light
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn. A long wick produces a larger flame, more soot, and faster wax consumption.
- Check the surface. Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface — never on wood, fabric, or anything flammable.
- Remove packaging and labels from around the jar before lighting.
While It's Burning
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. This is the most important rule. Extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Keep away from flammables. Maintain at least 12 inches of clearance from curtains, paper, bedding, and other combustibles.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets. Place candles on elevated surfaces where they can't be knocked over.
- Avoid drafts. Flickering flames burn unevenly and can cause the wick to move off-center.
- Don't burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Extended burns overheat the jar and can cause cracking.
Extinguishing Safely
- Use a candle snuffer rather than blowing out the flame — this prevents hot wax from splattering and reduces smoke.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle.
- Ensure the wick ember is fully out before leaving the room.
When to Retire a Candle
Stop burning when ½ inch of wax remains. Burning to the very bottom overheats the jar and can damage the surface it's resting on.
Storing Your Candles
Keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the color and degrade the fragrance over time. Always replace the lid between burns to preserve the scent.
